VICTORIA is one step closer to introducing a container deposit scheme after the Circular Economy (Waste Reduction and Recycling) Bill passed the Lower House this week.
Member for Mildura Ali Cupper said her community has been lobbying for this for many years.
“A container deposit scheme will provide a financial incentive for recycling eligible cans, cartons and bottles, and will help prevent litter,” she said.
“Charities as well as community and sporting groups will also benefit from a container deposit scheme, as they can collect bulk loads of recyclables, and then deposit them to earn a cash refund.
“It’s also a huge economic development opportunity, and is poised to create jobs, specifically targeting disadvantaged groups.”
Victoria’s container deposit scheme will also align with systems already introduced in SA, the NT, WA, QLD, the ACT and NSW.
“The process is immensely popular in other jurisdictions, and is a key element of creating a circular economy,” Ms Cupper said.
“A container deposit scheme will be part of a holistic approach to minimise waste, and recover and re-use resources.
“This will help our environment, help our economy, and will no doubt be extremely well received in our community.”
Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme is expected to launch in 2023.
