MEMBER for Mildura Ali Cupper has welcomed the National Farmers Federation’s Regional Development Precincts proposal and has expressed disappointment that the proposal has been snubbed by the Federal Government in the 2022 Budget.
Following a rigorous assessment process by the National Farmers Federation as part of their regionalisation agenda, Mildura was identified as one of four key Regional Development Precincts in the state.
“I agree with the NFF and VFF that Mildura has limitless potential as an economic engine room of regional Victoria, and we need all levels of government to work together to make it happen,” Ms Cupper said.
However, despite the report showcasing the region’s potential, the Federal Government has not included Mildura or any Victorian communities as ‘regions of national importance’ in the federal budget.
“Four key regional hubs have been mentioned in the Federal Government’s new investment plan, none of them are in regional Victoria,” Ms Cupper said.
“I think farmers in our region have a right to feel let down that the Federal Government has ignored the NFF’s recommendation.”
Ms Cupper said there are many things that could be realised in our region if the Federal Government backed Mildura as a Regional Development Precinct.
“We’re talking about investing in farming technology, water and energy security, worker accommodation and of course transport infrastructure,” Ms Cupper said.
“The Regional Development Precinct approach has the potential to bring together all three levels of government to back our region’s needs in a coordinated and connected way.
“But it’s fallen at the first hurdle and that’s a real disappointment.”
