MEMBER for Mildura Ali Cupper has welcomed the announcement that the Victorian Government will invest $726,000 into dome-style roofing for the twin basketball courts at Ouyen P-12 College.
Following lobbying by Ms Cupper, the Victorian Government allocated the funding which will enhance the look and versatility of the popular outdoor space, making it an all-weather venue for sport and learning.
“We all know how brutal the Mallee sun can be and as the climate changes, our summers are becoming longer and hotter,” Ms Cupper said.
“You could say that the Mallee has more need for shade than anywhere else in the state.
“Infrastructure like this is an important part of climate change adaptation.”
The advocacy campaign was a team effort, with Ouyen School Council President Raelene Vine playing a key role in initiating the pitch along with former President Tim Mellington.
“The Ouyen school community has been wonderful to work with and so has Minister Merlino’s office,” Ms Cupper said.
“We appreciate the Government’s willingness to listen and act when it comes to our local Mallee kids.”
Ms Cupper will visit the Ouyen P-12 school in the coming weeks to celebrate the new investment.
