Needs-based business payments a step in the right direction

THE Andrews Government has announced that Victorian businesses outside of a Commonwealth-declared COVID-19 hotspot will receive support payments to endure the State’s fifth lockdown.

$201.8 million dollars in support payments have been made available for eligible sole traders and business owners in regional Victoria.

Up to 90 thousand businesses will receive payments of $3,000 through the Licensed Hospitality Venue Fund, and/or $2,000 through the Business Costs Assistance Program.

Eligible businesses under the Victorian scheme include cafes, restaurants, bars, non-essential retailers, event suppliers, as well as tourism and accommodation providers.

This is separate to Commonwealth support, which will attend to the needs of businesses in the COVID-19 hot-spots of Greater Melbourne, Greater Geelong, Queenscliffe, the Surf Coast and Moorabool Shire.

Member for Mildura Ali Cupper has welcomed the collaborative approach that has been taken by Government.

“I’m pleased to see there’s been constructive talks between the State and Federal Government to deliver support in a needs-based fashion,” Ms Cupper said.

“It’s important that regional businesses feel supported and aren’t left out, as lockdown is affecting livelihoods and bottom lines, regardless of whether you’re in a hotspot or not.”

Meantime, workers who’ll lose 20 hours of work or more as a result of the lockdown are eligible for a $600 payment, those who’ll lose 8-20 hours can receive $375.

The Commonwealth will issue these payments for workers in hotspots, while the Andrews Government will handle payments for workers outside hotspot areas.

“Having that support net at the start of this snap lockdown does provide some re-assurance,” Ms Cupper said.

“It’s heartening to see workers are being considered, regardless of their location.

“Now we have to do all we can to keep the North-West a Covid-free zone, so we can emerge from lockdown as quick as possible.”

Applications for income support payments can be made at through Services Australia’s online portal at www.servicesaustralia.gov.au
