THE return of Mildura Base Hospital to public hands is the good news story the region needs during these difficult times.
Member for Mildura Ali Cupper said the one-month countdown had started to the September 15 handover date – a change that is one of the most significant moments for the region in recent memory.
“Putting the ‘public’ back into Mildura Base Public Hospital is not just a symbolic victory,” Ms Cupper said.
“This is a hugely significant. For 20 years we have had a failed privatisation experiment forced upon us and we will now have parity with the rest of the state.
“Ensuring we have access to the best possible health care was always our focus in getting the hospital back in public hands.
“This year has been hugely stressful and difficult for all of us due to the coronavirus pandemic so it is timely we have something significant like this to celebrate.”
Ms Cupper said the COVID-19 restrictions threatened to pour cold water on any physical celebrations, but plans were under way to significantly mark the moment.
“We have started thinking outside the box on ways we can properly commemorate the handover should COVID-19 restrictions remain in place, so watch this space,” she said.
Mildura Base Public Hospital’s board has been appointed with Mary Rydberg to be chair while current head of Maryborough District Health, Terry Welch, will be the chief executive officer.
