THE State Government is in the process of enacting an amendment, that will allow the qualifications of some workers to be recognised across multiple states.
The Mutual Recognition Victoria Amendment Bill 2021 aims to allow certain workers to operate interstate, without the need to gain an additional license.
Victoria’s proposal is to grant automatic recognition from July 1 for occupations including electricians, pest controllers, conveyancers and funeral providers.
Member for Mildura Ali Cupper said while some details need to be ironed out, it’s a step in the right direction.
“Anything to reduce the amount of red tape for cross border communities is a win,” Ms Cupper said.
“Our workers want to offer their services to our northern neighbours, but are all hampered with the need for dual licensing.
“We’re trying to get their qualifications recognised by all States, reducing registrations fees and other hurdles they face.”
Ms Cupper says other States are also working through their versions of the Bill, which may impact which workers will be eligible.
“We’re hoping for a common-sense approach when it comes to this issue,” Ms Cupper said.
“I’m cautiously optimistic that the process to work in multiple States will soon become easier.”
