With more than 10,000 additional truck movements a year on the road due to the stalling of the Murray Basin Rail Project, there was an absolute urgency around upgrading this road.
Many of our roads need attention with the Sunraysia, Mallee and Henty highways identified through my SH*T Roads campaign as among the worst in the electorate. It was terrific to see $4 million allocated in the Budget for the Henty Highway between Lascelles and Horsham.
I will continue to lobby for funding for upgrades to our roads, but I will also continue to fight to change the way money is allocated for maintenance and upgrades.
Currently the funding criteria is determined mainly by the volume of traffic.
However, that fails to acknowledge many other important factors including safety, the value of the roads to our economy or how dilapidated they are.
I have previously pressed Premier Daniel Andrews and government ministers on this issue in Parliament and I will continue to fight for parity.
