Small steps to reopening and normality

REGIONAL Victoria continues to take small steps to normality with cinemas, galleries, museums and music halls allowed to reopen from midnight Sunday.

The Victorian Government has also relaxed some of the visitor rules for hospital and aged-care homes in its latest announcement.

The “ring of steel” will come down, allowing free movement within Victoria while the State of Disaster will no longer apply.

Member for Mildura Ali Cupper said the latest changes were another positive sign Victoria had defeated the COVID-19 second wave.

“It seems like the changes are happening so slowly, but any change can only be considered a good thing,” she said.

“As of Sunday we have had eight consecutive days with no new COVID-19 cases and there are now only four active cases in the whole State so we are headed in the right direction.”

Ms Cupper said many people in the Mildura electorate would be frustrated there was no date set to end mandatory mask wearing.

“I have been advocating for some time to ease mask-wearing outside, where there is an ability to socially distance, while maintaining masks indoors,” she said.

“A lot of people will be disappointed there was no concession made on Sunday about mask wearing.

“We have been somewhat lucky it has been a mild spring so far, but hot weather is just around the corner and I would hope the government takes that into consideration.”

Ms Cupper reiterated her call for South Australia to follow the New South Wales’ lead by reopening its border to Victoria.

“NSW will allow free movement to Victorians from November 23 and South Australia must now do that same,” she said.
