Sports funding a big win for small towns

THE Victorian Government’s investment in sporting infrastructure will be a huge economic and social boost for several small towns in the Mildura electorate.

The Wycheproof Recreation Reserve project, the Nullawil Netball and Tennis project and the Beulah Recreation Reserve project will share in almost $5 million in funding as part of the Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus program.

The Wycheproof project includes installation of lights for the oval, tennis courts and hockey pitch while lights will be installed for netball and tennis courts and the football club as part of the Nullawil project.

The Beulah project includes construction of a female friendly changeroom facility and will provide a base for the Southern Mallee Giants Football and Netball clubs.

“Having this sort of investment in some of the small towns in the Mildura electorate is absolutely critical given the current economic outlook due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” Ms Cupper said.

“It is pleasing to see the Victorian Government recognising the need to fund projects in these towns to provide jobs in the post-pandemic recovery.

“Just as importantly, investing in projects which promote healthy activities is also huge for our small towns. Sporting clubs are the backbone of many of these communities in bringing people together.”

Ms Cupper said her lobbying efforts for the government to provide $10 million to complete Mildura South Regional Sporting Precinct in full remained a priority after it was overlooked in the current grant program.

“I have made it clear to the government through my #gameon campaign that it is crucial the government fund the $10 million to ensure Stage 2 of MSRSP is completed,” she said.

“I am lobbying the government strongly to ensure that funding is made in the State Budget, which is to be handed down in October or November.”
