MEMBER for Mildura Ali Cupper has a simple wish for people in her electorate this Easter – stay safe and stay healthy.
Ms Cupper said Easter in 2020 was unlike any other we had experienced and it was crucial people continued to heed the advice of governments to try and limit the spread of COVID-19.
Stage 3 restrictions enacted by the Victorian Government mean recreational boating, canoeing, kayaking, surf skiing, paddle boarding, kitesurfing, yachting and jet skiing are deemed non-essential and are banned.
Camping and fishing are also currently banned.
Parks Victoria has announced Murray Sunset National Park and Hattah-Kulkyne National Park are closed.
“Easter in Sunraysia traditionally means time with friends and family – and for many of us, time on the Murray River or camping at some of our wonderful parks,” Ms Cupper said.
“Unfortunately, this year we can’t do those things.
“My office has received numerous calls from frustrated residents about being unable to do all those recreational activities they normally could do, especially camping and fishing.
“I understand your frustration. I know it’s hard and at times it seems some of the laws put in place don’t seem fair or logical.
“But it’s important we all play our part in trying to ensure the spread of COVID-19 is limited as much as possible. This won’t be forever so please, be patient – I know everyone is having to make huge sacrifices but we will all get through this together.”
The state government is urging people not to travel over the Easter holiday period.
“My advice to people is to ask themselves: ‘Do I need to do this’?” Ms Cupper said.
“Limiting movement and limiting travel – all the social distancing measures we have in place – are designed to save llves.”
Ms Cupper is urging anyone who witnesses people flouting the current restrictions to contact the police hotline 131 444.
“On behalf of me and my team I wish everyone throughout Sunraysia a very happy and healthy Easter in what has been a really tough period,” Ms Cupper said.
