Stay the course with COVID-19 measures

MEMBER for Mildura Ali Cupper has urged Sunraysia residents to stay the course in the fight against COVID-19 by maintaining the “great work” they had been doing in social distancing and self-isolating.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews on Monday said the State Government would not consider easing any of the Stage 3 restrictions before May 11.

Stage 3 restrictions mean people should only leave their house for one of four reasons:

  • Shopping for food or essential supplies;
  • Medical reasons;
  • Exercise in compliance with public gathering requirements; and
  • Work or study.

Ms Cupper said she understood the restrictions were playing havoc with people’s lives but it was crucial everyone stayed patient, despite some other states including Queensland and Western Australia starting to ease theirs.

She said the restrictions had played a huge part in lessening the spread of the killer virus.

“I understand people are starting to get a bit of cabin fever because of the restrictions,” Ms Cupper said.

“We have done a terrific job in the Mildura electorate of keeping the numbers low.

“Mildura has remained on five positive cases of COVID-19 for a number of weeks now, and it is because of the work people have done in largely following the rules there has been no further spread.”

Ms Cupper said the relatively low numbers of positive COVID-19 cases in Victoria did not mean we were out of the woods and we had to ensure we did not get a second wave similar to what happened in other countries that lifted restrictions too soon.

“Hopefully in another two weeks we are still have the low numbers of cases, combined with increased testing, and the government can look at easing restrictions then,” she said.
