Support for students welcomed amid COVID19 disruptions

THE Victoria Government’s latest support initiatives will be welcomed by VCE students and their families in the Mildura electorate.

The government on Friday announced every student will be individually assessed and any adverse impacts from COVID-19 disruptions will be reflected in their ATAR rankings.

The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority will introduce ‘Consideration of Educational Disadvantage’ process to calculate VCE scores, taking into account disruptions from COVID-19 restrictions.

Member for Mildura Ali Cupper said the return to remote learning as part of Stage 3 restrictions was particularly concerning for Year 12 students as exams close in.

“The last thing we want is for our Year 12 students to be unfairly disadvantaged because of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Ms Cupper said.

“This initiative is a common-sense approach that takes into consideration the impact on each individual when calculating their final VCE results and ATAR ranking.

“The announcement of $28.5 million in extra funding for mental health support is also welcomed.

“Year 12 can be incredibly stressful for students and their families – who are at the moment having to try and also deal with difficulties around remote learning and other societal stresses related to COVID-19.”

The funding in part will allow more than 1500 school staff to undergo additional mental health training in partnership with headspace will also help identify and support at-risk students.
