Supporting and enhancing volunteerism

THE Victorian Government is currently developing a State Volunteer Strategy.

Mildura has this week played host to a volunteer consultation workshop, hosted by the Parliamentary Secretary for Carers and Volunteers, Anthony Carbines.

Local volunteers have provided key insights on some of the challenges currently faced in the sector.

Member for Mildura Ali Cupper joined in on the robust discussions, and is keen to see the end result.

“It’s an ambitious task to develop a state-wide strategy that will both improve volunteer experiences, and encourage more community members to get involved,” Ms Cupper said.

“It’s great that Mildura was able to take part in the discussions, to air concerns but also try and offer solutions.”

Mildura was the final regional pitstop of the workshop tour, after visits to Ballarat, Bendigo, Traralgon, Bairnsdale, Horsham, Geelong and Wangaratta.

“Some problems that need to be ironed out are safety concerns, a lack of acknowledgement for volunteers, excessive paperwork preventing new recruits, and the need to better advertise available positions,” Ms Cupper said.

Ms Cupper said each of the local groups present at the forum presented their own unique challenges.

“We had volunteers from SMECC, Parks Victoria, Landcare and Mildura Community House involved, and while they do terrific work, they want to do more,” she said.

“What struck me is the amount of community spirit and enthusiasm in the room, despite the hurdles these groups face.

“Anything the Government can do to support and enhance volunteering here would be welcomed, and I look forward to seeing the strategy that’ll be developed.”
