Wedded & Jedded

The very lame Christmas couch …
Believe it or not it’s the 28th November. Christmas is not far away. I am hoping for two things: for the world to return to normal (thanks to mass vaccination), and for Jed to not run screaming from the Christmas tree this year. In both cases, the signs are promising.

Nine out of ten Victorians are double vaccinated, and Jed has been dragging the tree out of the wardrobe like it’s kind of a big deal, rather than shoving it back in like it’s a triffid.

He has started to grasp the novelty of Christmas decorations, if not the delicate nature of them. Recently I came across one of our nicer Christmas ornaments – not on the ‘special’ shelf with all the other Christmas treasures – but outside … in the guinea pig enclosure.

Nice as Bicky and Jellybean’s compound is (the three of us – Bicky, Jellybean and I – are still waiting to be featured in Guinea Pig Magazine’s ‘Dream Hutch’ edition, but it’s only a matter of time), it is no place for a delicate, hand-painted Christmas decoration with tiny gold bells.

However, I’m choosing to look on the bright side and – putting aside the rain damage and heat stress – I’m taking Jed’s interest in the merry-go-round as a promising sign that we might be on the cusp of the first Christmas morning in two years where Santa won’t have to arrange the presents at the foot of the “Christmas couch”.

It’s been another tough year. We all deserve a lucky break. And while I did say I only wanted two things, I actually want three: worldwide vaccination, a Christmas Tree … and a happy little boy.

Childhood trauma stories – there’s a time and a place …

It’s always feels a bit strange being invited to sports events, especially athletics. As a kid I hated athletics almost as much as swimming.

I remember one day in Grade 2, crying on the morning of the inter school sports day, begging mum to please not make me go.

Explaining death to a 4 year old …

“Mum, where is Mopsy’s head?” Jed asked … in relation to my pet rabbit who passed away in 1994.

Jed is fascinated by death and the afterlife. And it runs in the family.

The snake bite wasn’t the worst of it …

Not last Friday but the Friday before, it was bloody hot.

I knocked off work and picked up Jed. I was exhausted and prepared to do anything for 10 minutes of peace, so caved, without resistance, to Jed’s demands for my phone on the drive home.
