THE ISSUES

Rates

One of the biggest scandals within Government right now is the difference in funding availed to councils based on their geographical location.

As it stands, the currently system disproportionately favours councils in the city, leaving the rest fighting over the scraps. I’m fighting to change this.

Increasing the amount of funding for local governments, and changing the conditions attached to the distribution of funds will address this scandal, and lead to lower rates for regional ratepayers.

And we need this.

All four local government areas in my electorate are among the 20 most financially disadvantaged LGAs in the State.

Buloke is the most financially disadvantaged, their ratepayers are shelling out more than six times the amount of money on rates than a homeowner in Toorak, and that’s wildly unfair.

If you lay out all the roads Buloke Shire needs to maintain, you can get from Birchip to Singapore.

Councils need more funding, and the way funding is delivered needs to change.

TL:DR...

  • Came up with a two point policy to address rates disparities between metro and rural areas
  • Called upon Victoria’s Local Government Minister to speak to his interstate counterparts on rates issue
  • Sent out letter of support requests to all 61 state and federal Victorian MPs
