Work together to overcome home learning struggles

THE struggle parents and teachers involved in remote learning are facing shows the importance of the need to work together for a common goal in an unprecedented time, Member for Mildura Ali Cupper says.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews this week said he expected the government’s current policy where children who could learn from home, must learn from home, would remain in place at state schools for Term 2.

It comes after students for the first time started remote learning last week as school returned from the Easter break.

Some parents have been frustrated by teething problems relating to technology but Ms Cupper urged patience, particularly in these early days.

Ms Cupper empathised with the situation parents faced in having children learn from home but said teachers were doing their best to adapt and evolve to the new learning environment.

“Our teachers do an incredible job and their value has never been more evident,” she said.

“This is an extremely stressful time for everyone. There are a lot of parents who are juggling responsibilities like working from home with supervising their children, who are learning remotely.

“It’s not an easy situation for them, but what we really need is a sense of understanding for each other.”

Ms Cupper said teachers were highly invested in their students and would love nothing more than to be able to return to the classroom.

“This isn’t an easy situation for teachers either and I just really hope parents, who I know are really stressed themselves, can show a bit of patience and understanding as the remote learning environment evolves,” she said.

“Teachers are mums and dads, grandmothers and grandfathers, so they understand and share some of the frustrations parents are feeling at the moment.”
